Short biography:
Julius Caesar was one of the greatest leaders in history. He started out as a politician and quickly rose through the ranks, fighting against political rivals such as Pompey, Crassus, and Cato. He was elected a consul in 59 B.C. and shortly afterwards he decided to start creating and empire. Caesar successfully led armies against Gaul, Germany, and Switzerland, and even invaded Britain, all while consolidating his power in Rome. He was appointed dictator for life in 45 BC but was assassinated by a group of senators who were jealous of his power and did not want Rome to become a dictatorship. However, Caesar had succeeded in paving the way for an authoritarian government, since shortly after his death, Rome began to be ruled by emperors.
